X-Wing software tools part 4: Apps

This is a repost from xwingminiaturesgame.com.

This is part 4 in a multi-part series about software tools for FFG’s X-Wing miniatures game. Parts 1, 2, and 3 can be found here, here, and here.

Android

Android users can get several useful and free apps from Google’s Play Store. I tested them on a tablet, so I can’t tell you how they handle on a phone.

 X-Wing Companion

URL: http://xwingcompanion.com/

X-Wing Companion contains all ship and upgrade cards for X-Wing. It also tells you in which expansion packs these can be found, and how many of them. It’s a great reference when you wonder what the ability of a certain pilot or the effect of that special upgrade is. Searching is possible, of course!

But there’s more. The Game Rules section links to the rulebooks and FAQs on FFG’s site, has the contents of the damage deck (great for playing on VASSAL), and the reference cards for bombs etc. that are included with ships that introduce new rules.

Simply put, a must-have app for Andoid users.

X-Wing Squadron Builder

I’ve discussed online squad builders in part 1, but there may be times when you don’t have an internet connection and still want to build a squad or two. You can of course save squads, and also share them using several methods (e-mail, Dropbox, Google Drive…). It’s up to date (including Wave 6 at the time of writing) and also contains a quick overview of all dials.

X-Wing Soundboard

URL: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dylanp.xwingsoundboard

Now, on to something less useful. 😉 I think we’ve all caught ourselves in the act of making funny noises while playing X-Wing. For those who want to take it up a notch, this app comes with “swoosh” and “pew-pew” noises for both Rebels and Empire. Perfect for further demoralising your opponent after taking out his most powerful ship.

X-Wing Dice

URL: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.eleazarlopez.x_wingdice

When it comes to rolling dice, I’m an analog guy – real dice, please. FFG have their own Star Wars dice app (usable for X-Wing, the Star Wars RPG, Imperial Assault, and Armada), which costs money. For those who don’t want to spend the few bucks on the FFG app and don’t need more than the X-Wing functionality, this app is the solution. It does what it it supposed to do and supports both focus tokens and re-rolls.

iOS

Don’t ask me why, but there seems to be only one X-Wing app for iOS at the time of writing.

Tournament Organizer for X-Wing miniatures

URL: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/tournament-organizer-for-x/id865051981?mt=8

As I wrote in my post on tournament software, getting help for computing results & pairings is no luxury. Cryodex does the job just fine, but for those who don’t want to carry around a laptop, this app might be the solution. I had some problems with version 1.05, but 1.06 has just arrived and computed correct results for the simple four-player, two-round tournament I used as test. The user interface isn’t always intuitive, but you’ll get the hang of it quickly.

A timer is included, but I didn’t find a way to enter point limits other than 100 points, so MoV computations will not be correct for e.g. 75 point tournaments. Just like Cryodex, it deals with first-round byes and players that belong to the same group. Definitely worth a try!
