For the Clan invasion, FASA originally provided the Clans with 16 Battlemechs from 20 to 100 tons. All of these are Omni ‘Mechs, meaning that their loadout can be reconfigured easily. Other ‘Mechs, such as the IIC variants of Inner Sphere designs and other Clan-designed ‘Mechs, were only added later.
Similarly to how certain Inner Sphere houses produce and predominantly use certain ‘Mech models, this also holds for the Clan Omni designs. I’ve compiled a list based on the information on Sarna:
- Fire Moth (Dasher): Ghost Bear and Hell’s Horses.
- Mist Lynx (Koshi): Smoke Jaguar.
- Kit Fox (Uller): Jade Falcon.
- Adder (Puma): Star Adder design, but common among the other clans.
- Viper (Dragonfly): Ghost Bear.
- Ice Ferret (Fenris): Wolf.
- Nova (Black Hawk): Not in production in 3050, but in use by all Clans.
- Stormcrow (Ryoken): Snow Raven, but in use by all Clans.
- Mad Dog (Vulture): Smoke Jaguar, but in wide use amongst the Clans.
- Hellbringer (Loki): Jade Falcon, but common among other Clans, too.
- Summoner (Thor): Jade Falcon.
- Timber Wolf (Mad Cat): Wolf.
- Gargoyle (Man’o’war): Wolf, but also used by other Clans.
- Warhawk (Masakari): Smoke Jaguar, but also in use by Ghost Bear and Jade Falcon.
- Executioner (Gladiator): Ghost Bear, also produced by Smoke Jaguar.
- Dire Wolf (Daishi): Smoke Jaguar and Wolf.
It’s important to note that both the unofficial faction assignment & rarity tables and official publications don’t follow this strictly. Designs not produced by a Clan were certainly available due to trade or capture (isorla), but if you want to build a force that is typical for a given clan, the above listing can be used as a guideline.
Building a Clan Wolf star
I tend to side with what is perceived as “the good guys”, so when it comes to the Clans, I’ve always been a Clan Wolf person. I’ve previously owned the 16 original Omni ‘Mech sculpts and painted them all in a Clan Wolf Alpha Galaxy paint scheme before selling them. After focusing exclusively on the Inner Sphere for a long time, I now wanted to build and paint a new Clan Wolf force, starting out with a star, i.e. five ‘Mechs.
Based upon the above list, an Ice Ferret and at least one Timber Wolf were given. I’m not a big fan of the Gargoyle – it’s objectively a worse ‘Mech than the Timber Wolf. It has less armor and pod space, and the Prime configuration has an abysmally low damage output. The Dire Wolf does not fit into a general purpose star. So to fill the gaps, I used two non-Wolf designs that are common among all Clans: the Stormcrow and Mad Dog. The Stormcrow is an excellent ‘Mech – fast, maximum armor, and decent configurations. It is a bit overshadowed by heavier Clan designs, but can beat any 3025-era Inner Sphere heavy ‘Mech.
So, what to use for the fifth ‘Mech? The obvious choice was a second Timber Wolf, especially given that Iron Wind Metals now make a completely new A-variant miniature that looks even better than the already improved resculpt from 20 years ago.
